After the guessing games of last week, it has been officially announced that Microsoft will definitely be issuing the final release candidate for Windows 7 next month.
The Windows 7 RC will go out to MSDN and TechNet professionals on 30 April and more widely on 5 May. After that, it’s almost certain that the retail version will appear in the summer, probably in July.
Although Microsoft announced a32 per cent drop in quarterly profits this week, its shares rose when it became clear that the much-anticipated operating system would get an early release.
Also, fears about backwards compatibility for older pieces of software look to have been eased after leaks suggest Windows 7 will be able to emulate Windows XP.
Experts at SuperSite for Windows say XP Mode will come as a free download for users of the Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7.
Reportedly, it will offer a virtual workspace running XP with Service Pack 3 inside a container that remains separate from the rest of the OS.
Microsoft says you’ll be able to get your hands on the legit Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 bits on May 5, the Windows 7 RC will be officially available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers on April 30th, and will be made publicly available on May 5th.
Two researchers at the Hack In The Box conference are claiming they found a way to gain access to any Windows 7computer undetected. Their weapon of choice is a 3kb app named VBootkit 2.0.
According to network world, the researchers said the hack is unfixable, as it loads itself into the system memory during bootup, which virus scanners will struggle to detect. The exploit then gives the CYBERTERRORIST the ability to pretty much do whatever they want on whatever computer they’re targeting. But don’t panic—this can’t be installed remotely, so they’d have to physically use your machine to pull this off.
